The players of Genoa are the new Squid Game' competitors
At least for the match against Napoli on Saturday
December 18th, 2024
We were all locked inside our homes when in 2021, Squid Game became one of Netflix's most unexpected successes. The small Korean series captivated the world with its cruel mechanism and unexpected plot twists. Now, with the highly anticipated second season finally approaching - it will be available on Netflix from December 26th - promotional activations could not be missed. Perhaps it was less predictable to see Balotelli, Gollini, and Frendrup wearing the green hoodie with a zipper that for nine episodes dressed the protagonists of the series, to present the collaboration between Genoa CFC and Netflix. A partnership that will come to life during Saturday's championship match, where Antonio Conte's Napoli will arrive at the Ferraris stadium.
The team, now coached by Patrick Viera and coming off six consecutive positive results, will take the field with an updated version of the third kit created by Kappa, with the Netflix branding on the left sleeve and the Squid Game 2 logo in the center of the shirt under the main commercial sponsor. But the most intriguing idea is definitely the hoodie that the red and blue team will wear during pre-game operations, effectively turning them into contestants of the TV series. A new and unexpected twist to the trend of Varsity Jacket worn on the field that we have seen in recent months, started by the city rivals Sampdoria with Macron, but also continued by adidas Originals in the recent games of Arsenal and Real Madrid.
Furthermore, it is not the first time that a football jersey has become a space for advertising the release of a new movie or TV series - perhaps the most famous example is the collaboration between Atletico Madrid and Columbia, which featured various upcoming titles on the Colchoneros' jersey in 2004 - or the more recent partnership between Barcelona and Spotify, with the logos of the world's most important musical artists sometimes appearing in the center of the blaugrana jersey, from The Rolling Stones to Coldplay. Now it will be Balotelli and his teammates' turn to become extras for a day in a Netflix production.
