No one transforms their jerseys like Orlando Pride
Sophie Hird's latest work confirms the power of upcycling applied to kits
April 8th, 2025
The Orlando Pride are not just the most important women's football team in Florida, but a true cultural hub for creatives who work and transform football jerseys into works of art. In the beginning, it was The Football Gal, aka Diana Al Shammari, who created The Luna Kit. The following season, another beloved artist from Instagram, Christian Jeffery, was called upon to design The Highway Woman Kit. Then, BloodIn BloodOut designed the Anniversary Kit for Marta. Now, it's Sophie Hird's turn. She is a British designer, graduate of the London College of Fashion, and a passionate soccer fan. Hailing from the northeast of England, her background as a player led her to grow up surrounded by vintage sportswear and develop a strong interest in upcycling found items to create new garments.
She was given the opportunity to work on the club's second kit, inspired by the local lemon industry, transforming it into a western shirt with fringe. It's a bold and never-before-seen design for a soccer kit, confirming the item's versatility in the hands of creatives. In 2022, Orlando Pride began collaborating with artisans from around the world to come up with and bring to life handmade artistic kits. This program identifies artists who demonstrate a true love for soccer through their work and invites them to collaborate with the club to create a conceptual kit with the current season's jersey design. Each creator offers their own vision that connects Orlando Pride and its language to their respective work, creating a truly unique piece. The results are 1 of 1 jerseys that inspire and further enhance the work done so far by the Orlando Pride.
