In the past weeks, it was underlined more than once that both the European Cup finals, especially the one of Champions League, would represent the final masterpiece of adidas, that succeeded in bringing 4 teams on the finals, without forgetting the official partnership with the same Champions League.
Both Juventus and Real Madrid, in fact, are two teams on which the German brand invested a lot, and will still do it in the next years.

Nevertheless, Nike could count on 25 athletes branded with the Swoosh in the roster of the two team and, in particular, on the reigning Balon D’or and main character of the Cardiff final: Cristiano Ronaldo. He leads his team with two goals, making sure the winning of his fourth Champions League in a row. A few hours later the victory Nike started to circulate a vintage picture of Ronaldo, very young, behind one football door. The caption was “This boy knew” and the copy “Nobody believed a boy from Madeira would make it to the stars. Except for the boy from Madeira”. The picture got thousands of like and repost (including ours) but it didn’t take long before someone noted something.

The image used by Nike was zoomed and it was not possible to fully see the sweater Ronaldo was wearing. But considering the original picture (that is simply to find) you can note as Ronaldo was actually wearing an adidas Equipment shirt.

A huge mistake by the Swoosh, that obscured the good “instant marketing” job done by the company. A company that is trying to compete with the three stripes and, in doing it, need the image of his best athlete – and incidentally the most famous and rich athlete on the Earth.
