Wayne Rooney's mystery

Usually, in today’s football, a player ends up under the spotlights as soon as he wears the latest pair of football boots, designed for him by his brand, or when - like Dybala - keeps everyone with baited breath while waiting to unveil which one will be his next partner. But the case that has kept all the fans on the edge of their chairs in the last day, is everything but usual. To draw the attention of the authorized personnel, in fact, has been the sudden change of boots by Wayne Rooney, back to Everton in the summer after becoming Man United and England all-time top scorer.

A dozen of days ago, in fact, during the penalty scored against Brighton, the cameras paused on Wazza’s shoe and guess what, he was wearing a pair of Nike T90 Laser II, a 2008 silo by the Swoosh. As odd as it may be - player don’t usually switch to ten-years-old boots just because - everything has been tagged just as something odd and then archived. At least until a few days later, when Rooney trained with yet another pair of T90, this time with the silver colorway.

At this point, all the most various theory about this sudden return to old shoes by Rooney were on fire. The English National team’s top scorer, in fact, has been Nike’s top player starting from 2003, first with the T90 and then being the face for the launch of the new Hypervenom. Of course though, in the last months, his commercial appeal has lost importance, especially after his departure from Manchester United and the Three Lions. So, what’s about this flashback to the past? Maybe Nike and Rooney are thinking about continuing their agreement or maybe Wazza is just at that point of his career when he can wear whatever boot he likes.

The mystery- if we can call it so - got even deeper today, when Rooney trained with yet another pair of vintage boots. The Englishman, in fact, wore a pair of Nike T90 Laser IV Clash, part of Swoosh’ collection for Euro 2012, firing up the conspiracy theories. And we like one in particular, that Nike would be preparing a custom shoe to “salute” Wayne’s career. Wouldn’t it be so romantic?
