The story of Laurie Cunnigham, between Real Madrid and soul music
Tifo Football tells the stunning story of the most talented black English football player
December 4th, 2017
Laurie Cunningham is recognized as the first black player to professionally represent England at any level. During the 70s when racist chants and bananas were thrown at players from the crowd were common, his time at Leyton Orient and West Bromwich Albion changed how black players were perceived and paved the way for a new generation of black English footballers, but his name is largely forgotten today. Just for this, he would deserve a spot in history, but his story is way more intriguing and complex. He began kicking the ball in West Bromwich Albion, then passes to Real Madrid - being the first English and the second black player ever to play for La Casa Blanca - for a record fee. After he played for Man United, Leicester Marseille and many more.
But more importantly, he has been one of the first black public figures in the United Kingdom, he bounded his name with London's black club scene and the iconic gangster fashion of the 70s. To celebrate his life Tifo Football posted this storytelling video on their stunning Youtube channel.
Tifo was born in 2017, replacing the prior uMAXit Football editorial site, and was introduced to sit alongside the free-to-play English Premier League predictor game; still called uMAXit Football.
