Luna Rossa presents new apparel in collaboration with The Woolmark Company
Dreaming the America's Cup with Prada
June 20th, 2019
It was 2000 when Italians get used to woke up at 3 am and turned the televisions on to watch the adventures of Luna Rossa at the America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. The Italian challenger - nicknamed "silver bullet" for its silver hull drawn only from the red Prada logo - came to challenge the New Zealand team after an exciting challenger final against the American team of American One helmed by Paul Cayard. Thanks to that adventure and its protagonists (among all the Neapolitan skipper of Francesco De Angelis), Italy rediscovered the love for sailing and Prada approaching that world launched Linea Rossa, the first true tech street line of a brand of high fashion. The technical fabrics of the sail and the sporty cuts of the garments have had a significant influence on the technical evolution of fashion and sportswear.
The Prada Luna Rossa team is still chasing Patrizio Bertelli's dream of bringing the world's oldest trophy to Italy, and today with a completely new hull the team presented the team's new apparel made of a new material: Merino wool. As the world’s oldest fibre, wool is 100% natural, renewable, biodegradable and is the most reused, recycled apparel fibre on the planet. Moving away from uniforms made from synthetic fibres, the use of wool in the Luna Rossa team uniforms offers a natural solution with reduced environmental impact and will be tested by the best through this technical partnership. The Woolmark Company has supported the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli product development team to create wool-rich technical garments to be worn by the entire sailing team during training, sailing and offshore activities. The collection includes a waterproof jacket, soft shell jacket, polo shirt, T-shirt, rain jacket, blouson, wetsuit and technical underwear.
"Our physical activity is very demanding in terms of clothing: the garments we wear must be as isothermal, elastic, breathable and water resistant as possible." Max Sirena, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team Director
