The new adidas VRCT jackets' font, by Fabio Novembre
There's the Italian designer behind the idea of removable patches on the jackets inspired by American colleges

His name has been many times linked, in recent years, to the new image of AC Milan: Fabio Novembre, the Apulian designer who in 2014 worked on the project for the new Milan headquarters, Casa Milan, and which in 2016 collaborated on the realization of the adidas home shirt of the Rossoneri, is behind the adaptive font to be applied on the new VRCT jackets unveiled last September.
Novembre studied a graphic character able to adapt to the rounded shape of the patches. To be precise, these are twelve different widths that correspond to different weights: bigger is the letter, bigger is its weight, a system that gives consistency and balance to the letters. As explained by the same designer:
"The character is inspired by the style of the classic letters of the 1950s not only linked to the world of sport, but also to the culture of that time and, above all, to aviation".
The varsity jackets made by adidas are openly inspired by the jackets used in American colleges, first introduced by the Harvard baseball team back in 1865 and soon became one of the most significant items of US sports culture. adidas has decided to draw inspiration from the sporting tradition of the schools, reinventing a completely new garment with contemporary style, and choosing six illustrious testimonials from different sports: the Houston Rockets basketball player James Harden, the para-cyclist Denise Schindler, the American dancer Mette Towley, Juventus football player Paulo Dybala, Chinese swimmer Ning Zetao and Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas. Everyone with a different story behind them.
And thanks to the personalized patches each champion has chosen a representative word to show himself, a way to tell their own growth, a fundamental quality in their personal success or that summarizes their individuality in the best possible way. As stated since Novembre, in fact:
'Every man, every athlete is a carrier and acts as a force, carrying a message with a wide audience. The idea was to recreate in the patch a sort of storytelling looking back at the victories in university traditions in the battles that take place in the present. Everyone must be able to choose their message to pin on their chest and wear it with pride, showing off a story.'
The adidas VRCT jackets are available on the German brand online store.
