China obscured the Houston Rockets during the All Star Game
The consequences of the Morey-gate continue in China, even on the occasion of the All Star Game
February 18th, 2020
On 4 October 2019 it seems very far away, but the war between China and the NBA world - in particular that segment of the Houston Rockets' membership - does not subside yet. Exactly 136 days have passed since the famous GM tweet of the Texan franchise that caused what everyone now calls "Morey-Gate" Although the official positions have been immediately clarified by the managers in the offices of the Olympic Tower in NYC, the National Basketball Association has not yet quantified the damage of that thought expressed via social media by Daryl Morey.
The estimate of the loss made by the NBA commissioner Adam Silver was of a figure that exceeds 100 million dollars, but it is practically impossible to establish with certainty the extent of what Silver himself has called "the magnitude of the loss".
Beyond the repercussions on the image of the League in the vast Chinese region, the burden behind this unpleasant issue is still visible today. Just during a TV show that preceded the start of the All-Star Game on Sunday, a Chinese broadcaster decided to obscure the name of the team for which James Harden plays, the Houston Rockets. In the background image of the talk, the difference of the jersey of the 2018 MVP is very visible compared to other players like James, Antetokounmpo, Leonard, Davis, Doncic, Siakam, Embiid, Young and Walker.
Probably this type of damage will not be part of the estimate made by Adam Silver, but it is a considerable harm to the image of one of the most important professional leagues in the world. The NBA-China wound now seems difficult to heal and it seems that the conditions are no longer needed to try to reopen the dialogue.
