Olimpique Marseille's PUMA uniforms for 'OM Africa'
To celebrate a week dedicated to the bound of the French club to African countries
January 29th, 2021
Olimpiqye Marseille presented three new lifestyle uniforms from the 'Africa' collection, designed by PUMA as part of the 'OM Africa' week organized by the club. It is a seven-day event in which the French company used the colors of the African continent on graphics and organized events to celebrate the strong bond of the club and the city with African countries. For this reason, PUMA - which is also sponsor of some of africa's best national teams - has designed this new set of uniforms which, however, has not been specified if they will also be worn on the court. To present the shirt, the slogan chosen by Marseille on Instagram is: "Inspired by Africa, dressed by all Marseilles".
The three meshes have the same pattern and an equal design, and the only difference between the models are the colors. Each has blurred and indefinite stripes that draw circles, which from the left side of the chest propagate to the rest of the shirt, and from the right side, the same. Despite the apparent confusion, however, there is order, and the final effect is that of crossed shades but that remain very distinguishable. It is the colors, if anything, that create a more intricate vision, and each shirt has its own base and personalized shades. The black base version has red and light green stripes, in the one with white base lines are yellow and dark green, while in the yellow base model they cross white and dark green. The colors of the collection refer to the multicultural richness of the city and, among other things, are the same shades that PUMA has included in the set of jerseys of the African national teams. Each shirt also has the 'OM Africa' badge on the right sleeve.
With these uniforms, Marseille wants to celebrate the link between the city and Africa, not only outside but also inside the camp. This is because the club has had in its history a strong presence of African players (on all Didier Drogba and Zinedine Zidane), and Marseille, a port city, has had more than other places a very direct contact with african territories. The 'Semaine Africa' started on Monday 25th and will end with saturday's match 30 between OM and Rennes at the Orange Velodrome; and in addition to the club's graphics, it is a period in which Marseille recalls the many initiatives in African countries, such as sports camps, the Fan Zone of Dakar (senegal), the inauguration of sports development programs or associations (such as the 'OM Africa').
