Rafa Nadal presented Mallorca's new away kit
A big unveiling for the return to La Liga
August 4th, 2021
There are few teams with such iconic and legendary fans and Mallorca, although not a top team, is one of them. For the presentation of the new away shirt, the club decided to rely on none other than Rafa Nadal, world star and current number 3 in the ATP rankings. RCD Mallorca's new away kit marks their return to the Liga Santander, after last year's excellent season in second place behind Espanyol.
Ed Shereeran recently decided to sponsor Ipswich Town but never before has a tennis player taken part in a shirt presentation. In the video and the shots, the Mallorca-born tennis star is training at his academy just before travelling to Washington to take part in the City Open tournament in preparation for the US Open.
What strikes beyond the grand presentation is certainly the design of the Mallorca shirt. The jersey is indeed basic white but with an abstract zig-zag graphic on the front, something we've seen on football pitches before. The pattern is certainly reminiscent of Nigeria's 2018 jersey, the green one with the arrow graphic that recalls eagle feathers which sold out in a matter of minutes and marked an important turning point for football shirt design. The same pattern also appears on Roma's training jersey for the 2019-2020 season, the only difference between the Mallorca one and the other two being the back, which is left totally white. Nike has partly recycled one of its most famous and successful designs, linking it to the image of an eternal champion like Rafa Nadal.
