Burberry has ordered the removal of Newport County AFC's third jersey

Newport County's aesthetic has always been special and Hummel's 2021-22 third kit is proof of that. Unfortunately for the English team, according to the Sun, Burberry has sued Newport County over their third shirt, forcing them to withdraw all of them from the market. The fault is to be attributed to the pattern chosen by the team that plays in League Two, the English fourth series, too similar to that of the English brand, always recognized through those unique lines and colours. The Burberry tartan pattern has been a registered trademark since 1920 and was first introduced as a lining for rainwear and cannot be reproduced in any way. At the moment there is no further feedback, Newport have officially stopped sales due to lack of raw materials and it seems they have asked their fans to return those already purchased. 

Until now, the English team has only worn the first and second shirts on the pitch, avoiding possible fines. The third shirt was unveiled this summer and is the result of a fusion of the Welsh team's creativity with Goldie Lookin' Chain, a famous hip hop comedy group from the city.

A few days ago there was a similar case but with the roles reversed. For its couture collection, Moschino has revived a very special pattern used on the Arsenal goalkeeper's jersey in the 1994-95 season. The Italian company has created an entire collection with the same pattern used by the gunners in the late '90s.

Despite the close resemblance between the two patterns, one wonders why a fashion brand of Burberry stature decides to intervene and block the entire supply of the shirt of an English fourth division team. It seems just as strange that a creative director like Neal Heard, has blatantly taken inspiration from the famous British tartan without knowing what consequences he would face. A complex issue that after years sees football and fashion as enemies and no longer as neighbouring universes with the desire to infect each other.
