Milan and Inter Milan could change the location of their new stadium
A stalemate for the new San Siro that does not please the two Milanese teams who want to speed up the process
March 29th, 2022
It was 10 July 2019 when Milan and Inter Milan announced their desire to find a joint solution for a new stadium. Today, almost three years later, the foundation stone has still not been laid and the stadium issue appears to be stuck in a complex bureaucratic process, a situation that has led the two Milanese to once again consider the possibility of abandoning the Meazza and Milan and build the stadium elsewhere, precisely in Sesto.
The mayor of the Milanese suburb has seized the opportunity, declaring himself more than willing, indeed: "building the new stadium in Sesto San Giovanni will not be complicated given the urban planning regulations and the reclamation of the Falck areas already underway," announced the administrator, who had already tickled the clubs several times in the past about the possibility of moving there. "We have the largest brownfield sites in Europe, which include the former Falck areas with 1,250,000 square metres, to which we then add 350,000 square metres of former Marelli areas and another 400,000 square metres of former Vulcano pickling areas."
There is little optimism among the two teams, and the stalemate generated by the appeals presented to the administrative judges, the two referendums and the pressing request for public debate does not encourage the teams to go ahead and realise the magnificent Populous project. The Mayor of Milan, however, does not share this view, as he does not want to leave a large, historic stadium like the San Siro empty and unused. This is not the first time that a similar situation has arisen in Italy, but Inter and AC Milan are intent on speeding things up, even embracing the idea of abandoning San Siro forever, a stadium where both have founded and built their history.
