Balenciaga has crafted a jersey mixed between Liverpool and Manchester United
The collaboration with adidas confirms that football jerseys are now a fashion items rather than playing apparel

Last Sunday in Balenciaga's New York fashion show for Spring 23, amidst latex masks and tailored cuts, the French fashion house's collaboration with adidas was also presented. A capsule collection dedicated to streetwear where, of course, there was no shortage of references to football, especially with a game jersey that resembled that of Manchester United in terms of colors and crests used. It would not have been the first time that a Red Devils jersey was the star of a fashion runway, a recent example being the rework operated by Phipps Gold Label and worn by A$AP Rocky in the video of "D.M.B." on Eric Cantona's number 7 and sponsored by Umbro.
Upon closer inspection, however, it was discovered how the jersey was not designed on the templates used by adidas for Manchester United, whose technical sponsor it has been since 2015, but rather of a jersey made by the German brand for rivals Liverpool in the 2008/09 season. At that time, the Reds on the jerseys worn by Fernando Torres and teammates had precisely the Three Stripes positioned in the center just below the collar. And these elements, combined with the Three Stripes on the sleeves and the tone-on-tone ones in the jersey weave suggest that Demna performed a remix between the two inspirations, taking advantage of the similarity of the social colors. Then again, both Manchester United and Liverpool remain two of the European clubs with the greatest symbolic value, and it is no coincidence that they are used on the catwalks as cultural icons, discorporating their relationship with the field and soccer played.
