Why Lyon fans have a problem with adidas' new boots
The problem lies in the colour of the new Speedportal X
August 22nd, 2022
The new and irreverent launch campaign with Rick&Morty was not enough to convince the Lyon fans. Yesterday during the third day of the French championship, the team's supporters strongly protested with choruses and signs against the Speedportal X, the new boots made by adidas. The motivation is to be found in the colour, a green that recalls that of Saint-Étienne, Olympique Lyone's historical rival team. A protest that does not seem ready to be interrupted, since this boot is worn by a dozen of the French team's footballers and, moreover, adidas has been the French team's technical sponsor since 2010.
Such a protest had not yet been seen in the world of football and probably not even adidas had planned something like this. Something very similar, again in France, had happened two years ago, when a part of the organised Paris Saint-Germain supporters - the Collectif Ultras Paris - gathered outside the stadium and displayed banners that read 'Rendez nous les maillots Hechter' (Give us back the Hechter jersey) and 'Boycott du maillots 2021-22' (Let's boycott the 2021-22 jerseys). This protest stems from the fact that in next season's home kit there is no reference to the Hechter design, which is considered a stylistic institution and an indispensable symbol of PSG. Of course, Olympique's case is absolutely different, as it is only a shoe, which will only be worn in the first part of the season, but the protests seem to have only just begun, with the fans not really wanting to take a step back.
