Your next favourite club is located in Greece and is called Athens Kallithea FC
They have just presented their new logo and the first two jerseys designed by Bureau Borsche
September 23rd, 2022
Founded in 1966, the club is based in the Athenian district of Kallithea (which means 'beautiful view' in Greek) and plays 1 km south of the Acropolis in the small but distinguished Grigoris Lambrakis stadium and we are sure this will become your next favourite club. Its stadium is commonly referred to as 'El Paso' in reference to Clint Eastwood's 1965 spaghetti western film because it was built on the site of a quarry and features a tall rock that runs along the north side of the pitch. If this already wasn't enough, today Athens Kallithea F.C. just unveiled their new logo and first two jerseys, all entirely designed by Bureau Borsche, the brilliant German design studio that handled the rebranding of Inter and Venezia. And as always, the German studio did not disappoint expectations, revolutionising the entire visual identity, which now features a stylised 'AK' crest with gold and the traditional blue and white of the updated club.
And if anything reminds you of Venezia, it is thanks to Ted Philipakos, brand manager of the Veneto club, who has been quietly working on this parallel project in another European cultural capital, Athens, for the past 18 months. The new club, like Venezia, has entrusted the production of the jerseys for next season, which will start in October, to Kappa, while Borsche, as previously mentioned, is still designing them. The kits will stand out for the high aesthetic standard that has characterised Venezia for several seasons now, but with a unique, simple yet elegant style. The first jersey will be blue with a white collar, while the all-white away jersey is embellished with a blue and gold central stripe. The campaign is shot in its entirety by Chris Kontos and edited by Daphne Iliaki exalts the beauty of the eccentric and modest nature of the Greek city in the certainly less characteristic but equally typical places in the centre of Athens.
“The game has a beautiful heritage in Greece, but that’s been tortured over the last 15 years, which was set in motion by UEFA systematically marginalizing football outside of the top five leagues, and made worse by the country’s most important stakeholders not working together and generally falling out of touch,” said Ted Philipakos. “At the core of the mission of Athens Kallithea FC is to contribute in our own small way to a repositioning of football in Greece.”
AKFC will begin its league campaign in October and expectations are already very high, the stated aim being to catch up with the likes of Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens. Last season - the new team's first full season since taking over - the club finished second in the Greek second division, their best season in 16 years since they last played in the top flight. In anticipation of their promotion and consecration you therefore already have more than one good reason to start supporting Athens Kallithea F.C., so don't say we didn't warn you.
