The best looks of 2022
Who did you vote for among the best-dressed atlethes of the last year
December 29th, 2022
We are certainly not just now discovering how image-conscious athletes have become on and off the field, but with each passing year there are more and more examples of how there are personalities in every sport who are able to influence fashion rather than follow it. We have selected four examples of how style can be interpreted, choosing fast-rising young athletes over more established names to highlight this constant change in the relationship between sport and fashion, and then subjected them to your judgement to decide who wins the Best Dressed Athlete of the Year Award.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
This year's winner was NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, SGA for his friends, of the Oklahoma City Thunder. A clear win that does justice to the talent he displays both on the court and in the tunnel to the arena. His ability to switch between European luxury brands like Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton and more US streetwear, seamlessly switching between all-black leather and the colourful fleece or puffer jackets that accompany him before the game, makes him an absolute style icon.
Marcus Thuram
The son of Lilian, the first father-son pairing to take to the pitch during a World Cup final, Marcus Thuram represents the new generation of transalpine talent who land in Clairefontaine every time as if they were at a fashion show. The Borussia Moenchengladbach winger knows how to make an eye-catching entrance, with unique pieces from Prada, Louis Vuitton and Goyard, not forgetting, of course, a collector's pair of Jordan and a few echoes of Japanese fashion. While he waits to become one of the hot names in the football market, Tikus has already confirmed that he is one of the hot names in fashion.
Hwang Hee-chan
The Wolverhampton forward may not have received as many marriage proposals as his national teammate Cho Gue Sung, but during the World Cup in Qatar, Hwang Hee-chan caught the eye of all football fans. But his lifestyle side should not be underestimated either, consisting of minimal choices but always with great elegance and awareness. The Korean charm, one of the fastest growing nations in the global fashion scene, naturally contributes to this.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Close behind in third and second place is the Everton gem who, along with teammate Tom Davies, form one of the most elegant pairs off the pitch. Calvert-Lewin was indeed the star of fashion week. He showed great versatility in his looks, switching with ease from oversized Giorgio Armani suits to Gucci overalls and a printed shirt by Casablanca.
