FIGC's 125th anniversary in a new Italian national team kit
adidas celebrated the history of the national team and the 1910 match debut
June 13th, 2023
You may remember Francesco Calì, Virgilio Fossati or Pietro Lana's goals, names little known in the football world but protagonists of the Italian national team's historic first match, on 15 May 1910, against France at the Arena Civica in Milan. The first match was played 12 years after the birth of the FIGC, which celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2023 with a new retro kit created together with adidas.
The kit was created for the UEFA Nations League finals, which will see the Azzurri take on Spain in the first match of the final four, scheduled for 15 June. The jersey is inspired by the one worn by the Azzurri's first team, not only for the colours but also for the materials of the kit, which recall the cotton of the first uniforms.
The choice of adidas and FIGC is to create a total white shirt, with gold inserts such as the three stripes and the federation logo, to which a laurel wreath and the inscription "125th anniversary 1898-2023" are added. The kit, which comes complete with black and gold socks, is made in a limited edition of only 2023 pieces and is contained inside a white and gold commemorative box in which the postcard with the formation that defeated France 6-2 in that historic first match is also included. The campaign photos feature some symbols of the current national team such as Willy Gnonto, Federico Dimarco, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Leonardo Bonucci, set in a setting with a vintage patina reminiscent of the early 1900s.
