Atletico Madrid's new shirt inspired by the 'match of shame'

The semi-final first leg of the 1973-74 European Champions Cup has gone down in history as the 'match of shame'. Atletico Madrid in front of 72,000 spectators at Celtic Park managed to snatch a 0-0 draw against the reigning European champions, despite three expulsions and a manhunt by Celtic. In the return leg, Madrid's 2-0 draw took the Spaniards into the final - later lost - against Bayern Munich, but the spirit with which the Colchoneros played the first leg match has remained in the club's legend, so much so that a new commemorative shirt has just been unveiled, to be worn by Atletico in Wednesday's Group E match against the Scottish team.

In the Glasgow match, President Vicente Calderón's team took the field in a red jersey, with a white striped collar and cuffs, combined with red socks and blue shorts. The same kit has been revived fifty years later, with the Nike jersey abandoning the white stripes. The shorts and socks will also pick up the colours of the shirt worn in 1974, with the Spaniards hoping that this edition of the Champions League will bring the same satisfaction as that historic year.
