Ligue 1 launches a badge for the top scorer
This weekend, all eyes on Mbappé
November 24th, 2023
Historically, in football, the title of top scorer does not enjoy enormous consideration. Beyond the recognition given at the end of the season to the winner of the special ranking in each league, the goal-scorers' competition is secondary, for some purely statistical. Ligue 1, however, has decided to overhaul the attention usually given to the scoring chart by introducing a new, special badge. This badge will appear, day by day, on the shirt of the top scorer of the league. This means that, almost like a title, it can be contested during each matchday. The first to showcase it will be Kylian Mbappé in the match against Monaco, scheduled for Saturday evening. The timing of this introduction in the major French league is noteworthy: after only twelve matchdays, the 1998-born player is already 6 goals ahead of Akor Adams of Montpellier, so the chance that Mbappé can continue to display the emblem until the end of the season is quite high.
Ligue 1 has studied everything in detail. The logo design was imagined by the internationally renowned artist Tyrsa, famous for collaborating with Dior, Louis Vuitton, Moncler, and artists like FKA Twigs or Childish Gambino. Although clear and official images or further information have not yet been released, it should be a golden "S1" logo. It is a very interesting initiative, introduced precisely in Ligue 1. The French top tier is, historically, a one-sided competition. Apart from a few exceptions, such as the downfall of Paris Saint-Germain under Pochettino in the 2020/2021 season, which handed the title to Lille coached by Christophe Galtier, the trophy almost always ends up in the hands of the Parisians. Could this introduction bring more excitement to the league? We hope so, while waiting to see this initiative land in the remaining top European leagues.
