Aston Villa unveils the new, old crest
Change of technical sponsor and crest for return to Champions League
May 21st, 2024
Through teaser videos shared on Instagram and X, Aston Villa has unveiled the switch to a new crest that will appear on the English team's jersey starting from the 2024/2025 season. This decision adds further ambiguity to the prospects of the Birmingham club: the new logo indeed revisits the style of the one used in the 2007/2008 season, from 2008/2009 to 2015/2016, and from the 2016/2017 season to 2022/2023, both in terms of color scheme and outline, with some slight stylistic variations. The Premier League season that ended this weekend symbolized a period of transition for Aston Villa, which chose to rework the style of the crest used in the decade from 1980 to 1990. Circular and with the lion facing the opposite direction compared to the traditional version, it indeed replaced the iconic shield-shaped crest for an entire season, which is now set to return next season. The only feature that remains unchanged from the crest used this season is the full name of the club, which will be placed at the bottom along with the year of the club's founding, confirming the version reported by this article from The Athletic, according to which it was leaked by Betano, Aston Villa's new betting sponsor.
Along with the new crest comes the switch to adidas, ending the relationship with Castore that lasted only two seasons. The team coached by Unai Emery is preparing for the new Premier League season with a completely renewed visual identity, which is hoped to be a good omen for a coach who secured an important fourth place in the league, guaranteeing the Villans participation in the next Champions League. There is an eager anticipation for the next season of the club, which hinted through a takeover of the city of Birmingham how the technical sponsor and the new logo will become one, sparking speculation about the new kit which, in all likelihood. Indeed, Villans footballers were not mad at the latest kits made by the English brand.
«The announcement of the partnership with adidas, the biggest in the Club’s history, follows the announcement of our new front-of-shirt sponsor, Betano, a couple of weeks ago. It marks another milestone in our journey to grow our business on the global stage. We cannot wait to show the fans the new home jersey for the upcoming season, which will see UEFA Champions League football at Villa Park for the first time in the Club’s history. Up the Villa!» said Chris Heck, president of business operations at Aston Villa. With this move, adidas considerably increases its weight in the Premier League, given the agreements also signed with Liverpool starting in the 2025/26 season and Newcastle United.
