Broken Rackets
The aesthetic component of the sport is conveyed through its photographic representation, which fades out the factor of time but consolidates the elegance of the stadiums and the athletes. In tennis, this suspension of time creates still images in which plasticity and geometry reinforce the fascination and uniqueness of the sport. In 2022, photographer Emanuele D'Angelo founded Broken Rackets to celebrate tennis as a culture, lifestyle and art, taking an unconventional look at the sport that simultaneously grit and grace.
The Broken Rackets project captures the passion and the fleeting moments, highlighting not only the players, but also the fashion, the fans, the staff, everything that contributes to the energy of the sport. One of the aims of the project is to track down hidden places around the world, discover them and capture their unique charm. Among the courts are some that blend sport and nature, whether by the sea, on cliffs or hidden on sunny slopes. This look at tennis breathes new life into a sport that is gaining more and more visibility and interest from sponsors and fans.
This article shots of some of the most beautiful places Emanuele D'Angelo has visited around the world, including, of course, the sacred temples of the circuit: Indian Wells, the Monte-Carlo Masters, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Among the favourite places he has visited in recent years are the courts of the Goldstein Residence in Beverly Hills, the Monte-Carlo Country Club, the Hurlingham Club in London and the famous court of Il San Pietro in Positano.
However, the magnetic charm of tennis is not without its athletes, and among the many immortalised in Broken Racket's publications are photographs of Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti, Ben Shelton, Arthur Fils and the Brazilian Joao Fonseca. But of course also Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Bublik as well as champions on the WTA circuit such as Aryna Sabalenka, Marta Kostyuk, Zheng Qinwen, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff and Eva Lys.
