Ajax returns to the old logo
On the occasion of the 125th season of the club
November 18th, 2024
The 2025/26 season will mark the 125th anniversary of Ajax, a milestone that the Amsterdam club has decided to celebrate by returning to the past. After 34 years, the old crest will once again be featured on the Ajax jerseys and facilities, the same crest that defined the club from 1928 to 1991. This is a strong choice and goes against the current trend of clubs adopting more minimal and scalable logos, without too many graphic details. Instead, the historical Ajax logo features a more complex version of the face of Ajax the Great, the Homeric character that gives the club its name, according to early 20th century illustrations. This is why the official nickname of the players is "Godenzonen", the Dutch word for "Sons of the Gods", continuing the epic theme, rather than the more famous "lancers", even though this was the weapon used by Ajax in battle.
Ajax is following the current trend of rediscovering vintage logos that have marked the history of clubs, often used on second and third jerseys or in lifestyle collections, to showcase the identity and tradition of the team and its fans. However, the lancers have gone a step further, and it seems that they will use the logo on all jerseys of the upcoming season and in all properties of the club, thus changing their aesthetic profile. This is a move that resembles the one made by Borussia Dortmund, which has decided to secure its logo and colors for the rest of its history. Ernst Boekhorst, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated: "The 125th anniversary seems like a very appropriate moment to return the logo to the club, the fans, and ourselves. We are happy to make this contribution." The return of the new logo was celebrated today in a sold-out Johan Cruijff Arena, where the Ajax Legends faced the Real Madrid Legends.
