Everything you need to know about the future of San Siro Stadium
Doubts and certainties about the Scala del Calcio
March 26th, 2025
As of today, the new stadium in Milan, which will replace the current Meazza in San Siro, could be completed in 2031. Yes, you read that right: it will take as long as six years to witness the first match in the new structure. But what will happen to the current San Siro? Will it be renovated or demolished? There are many uncertainties, as there are different hypotheses regarding its future. The most likely scenario is the one already mentioned, which involves the construction of The New San Siro, while the current structure would be partially preserved and designated for museum and commercial use. This "agreement" would allow the two Milanese clubs to preserve the memory of one of the most iconic stadiums in football history, both in Italy and internationally: home to Inter and Milan, a venue for concerts, a true mausoleum that continues to represent an incubator of Italian and international popular culture for almost a century, specifically since 1926. On August 1st, the 100th anniversary of the start of the construction of San Siro will be celebrated.
A public notice has been published on the Municipality of Milan's website to collect expressions of interest regarding the San Siro area, with the aim of evaluating any proposals in addition to the purchase offer already presented by Inter and Milan. The notice will remain open until April 30th and was published a week after the City Council's decision that approved the guidelines for the administrative process regarding the sale of the area to the two Milanese clubs to build The New San Siro Stadium.
The name, cost, and area of the New Meazza Stadium
What will the new San Siro Stadium be like? And most importantly, where will it be located? Although no official proposals have been made for the name of the new stadium, as this will depend, in part, on possible sponsors, the discussion regarding the location of the new 71,500-capacity stadium is clearer. The new stadium will be built near the current San Siro: the new project aims to preserve the citizens’ connection to this area. The stadium, which should be relocated to the current parking area behind the west sector of Meazza, will be positioned further away from the residential buildings. Only part of the original Meazza façade and a section of the second ring in the orange sector will be preserved, though the latter will undergo a complete redevelopment.
Regarding the construction costs, the project is estimated at around 1.25 billion euros. The estimated value of the current Meazza stadium is 197 million euros, a figure set by the Revenue Agency, broken down as follows: about 72 for the value of Meazza and around 124 for the surrounding areas.

As previously mentioned, the stadium is expected to be completed in 2031, but the final project is expected to conclude in 2035. In addition to the stadium itself, a surrounding area is planned, designed to redefine the social aspect around the stadium. The creation of a green area, which would include commercial activities, is a strategic choice to make the stadium and the city of Milan more attractive as a venue for Champions League finals. Just recently, it was confirmed that the 2027 Champions League final will not be played in the Milanese stadium but at the Wanda Metropolitano, home of Atletico Madrid.
Regarding the timeline, there is another particularly important date: July 31st, 2025, the final deadline for the sale of the area to Milan and Inter. If this deadline is not met, a restriction will come into effect that would block the construction of the second ring of the new stadium.
The structure of the New Meazza
What does the project for the new San Siro stadium include? The new stadium will indeed be positioned further from residential areas and will be built on a podium that will serve as an entrance for fans. "On days when there are no matches, part of the podium will open up, transforming into a large urban square, integrated with the surrounding park," reads the project. The document emphasizes that the stadium's design will feature two rings, inspired by the historic 1950s San Siro design, to preserve the identity of the original structure, which has made history for both clubs. Additionally, according to the project, which was made public thanks to the famous DocFap (the feasibility document submitted by the two clubs to the Municipality), the new stadium will host an area dedicated to hotels, offices, and shops, with spaces accessible to the public and community facilities such as areas for the elderly and young people.
