Hackney Marshes is a park in Homerton, in North London. Besides the tranquility and squirrels, it’s famous for being one of the most fascinating places where the Sunday League plays. In case you’re wondering what that is, we give you a brief summary. Sunday League comprehends all non-professional leagues which play on Sunday instead of the classic Premier League’s Saturday. It’s also called Pub League, because of the many groups of people which claim to represent their favorite local, where they usually drink and watch games on TV.
One of these teams is the Gun FC, named after a North London pub, a few miles away from the Marshes. Their story is narrated in a short movie produced by SoccerBible and Puma, a testimony of the true meaning of playing in the Sunday League. Because we’re talking about a day that usually represents a resting day for the people who play in that league, which are regular workers. But instead of resting, the wake up early and a face the low temperatures of the English winter, just to play some football.
Hackney Marshes is way more than just a football field, it’s more like a mecca for everyone who can’t stand a week without playing a football game. It’s composed by a side-by-side series of posts, in which every team puts his own net, playing a game after another. And at the end, doesn’t matter if winning or losing, everyone goes to the pub together, to drink a beer and analyze the game. And who knows, maybe sometimes will happen to win some silverware, which would be proudly shown at The Gun, 235 Wells Street, North London.
