Why did FC Inter play in blue shorts?
An unprecedented match choice for the Nerazzurri's Away kit
October 23rd, 2023
Inter returned from the national team break with a convincing away performance against Torino. Goals from Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Çalhanoğlu brought the Nerazzurri back to the top of the table, but already from the warm-up something unusual had been noticed in the team's uniforms. The away kit had been chosen for the match, which as a natural match would have white shorts and socks, but at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino the Inter players took to the pitch in a light blue model, with white numbers and Nike Swoosh.
Also in Turin, Roma had used the home kit shorts on the away jersey. The choice of colour is interesting and goes well with the details of the Away shirt, curious however is the fact that the shorts had not been presented at the beginning of the year and until this day had never been worn and matched with any kit. A further question mark concerns the fact that the blue shorts are currently not even available in Inter's online store.
Already in the 2022/23 season, the usual white shorts for the Away kit in Torino had been replaced by the black model traditionally matched to the Home shirt, the choice therefore appears anything but random. The rules of the league stipulate that the players' uniforms (shirt, shorts and socks) must be of a different colour for each of the two teams, and since Torino have white shorts in their Home kit, it was Inter who had to find an alternative. It was an interesting choice not to use the black model again, but to create a dedicated item. It is not clear if this variant will officially enter the Inter home kit, for now it remains a curious choice for jersey fans, a return to the 1980s when for the last time the Nerazzurri had blue shorts in their uniform.
