May 3rd, 2018
Now that the two 2017/18 Champions League semifinals are in the archives, we can start to focus on the Final in Kiev, scheduled for Saturday, May 26, at the Olimpijs’kyj Stadium. To prevail in the double-clash have been Real Madrid and Liverpool, that will now face each other in what could be one of the most hard-fought, crazy and entertaining finals ever. In fact, this very edition of the biggest European cup has been unbelievable, surely one of the best ever.
So, we decided to tell you some facts and curiosities about the Kiev final, to prepare you at the best for the most important appointment of the season, before the awaited kickoff of the 2018 World Cup.
If the final could be one of the best ever, the semifinals haven’t been that bad at all. The confrontation between Roma and Liverpool has become the semifinal with the biggest amount of goals scored ever: 13.
It’s not a case, though, as the very Klopp team has just smashed the record for most goals scored in a single Champions League campaign, scoring as much as 46 goals. The record belonged to Barcelona, that in 99/00 was able to score 45.
A big slice of the credit goes to the Reds’ offensive trio, that just became the most prolific ever in a single Champions League season, outscoring Real Madrid’s BBC (Bale-Benzema-Cristiano) that in 2013/14 scored 28 goals. Salah (10), Firmino (10) and Mane (9) got to score 29.
As you know, all the team that participates in the European competition are ranked by UEFA. Well, Real Madrid is going to face the lowest-ranked team in the very final, as Liverpool is currently 22nd. Real previously met and defeated PSG (7th), Juventus (5th) and Bayern Munich (2nd).
In the Kiev final, two of the most decorated teams in football will meet each other. It will be the first time that the two finalist gathers 17 European cups and 24 participation at finals.
For the first time since the 2004/05 season, the team that eliminated Barcelona won’t participate in the final. During the years, in fact, except when the Blaugrana themselves reached the final, the team that eliminated Barça always went through the whole competition.
Red luck? In all the five Champions Leagues that has won, Liverpool has always been drafted as the home team, being able to play with the red kit. Even more unbelievable than that, all the opponent teams (Borussia Mönchengladbach, Brugge, Real Madrid, Roma, and Milan) always played with a white shirt.
Bonus: Liverpool will benefit from the Champions League final but also will… LeBron James. The NBA superstar, in fact, bought the 2% of Liverpool shares back in 2011 for $6,5M. Well, according to the analyst, those very shares could be know be sold for more than $30M. Not bad, King James.
