J.LEAGUE celebrates its 29th anniversary through its icons
From Leonardo to Iniesta, passing through Wenger, Zico and the timeless Miura
May 14th, 2021
After taking its jerseys around the world, J.LEAGUE is celebrating its 29th anniversary today. On May 15, 1993, the first historic match between Yokohama Marinos and Verdy Kawasaki was played at Mitsuzawa Stadium. Ramón Díaz, former Inter Milan and the first top scorer in the history of the Japanese league, will stand out in that inaugural season. He will be only the first of a series of champions who will choose to try the mystical experience of football in Japan, a place where football is becoming a religion but also a tool through which to convey a very specific aesthetic.
The Japanese league, born from the ashes of the Japan Soccer League, on such a special day decided to open their archives and show the world their rough diamonds and talents from all over the world who have contributed to the global growth of J.LEAGUE , one of the fastest growing professional leagues in recent years.
For J.LEAGUE Day from the historical archives come images of the greatest superstars who from the 90s to today have played in the championship of the land of the Rising Sun: from Zico to Iniesta, from Leonardo to a very young Nakata, from Dunga to Hulk, from Lineker to Stojković, passing through great managers such as Arsene Wenger and Felipe Scolari. But not only big players from abroad. Japan thanks to the expansion of the league has managed to train interesting players such as Kubo, considered one of the most interesting prospects in the country. How can we forget, then, the highlander par excellence: the legend of Kazuyoshi Miura - for all King Kazu - who at 54 has no intention of quitting.
