The one-sided match literally dominated by Ademola Lookman and his teammates kicked off the celebrations of Atalanta fans, who took to the streets of the city to express their joy. The team coached by Gasperini is the first Italian side to win the Europa League – formerly the UEFA Cup – since the heroic Parma in 1999. This is also Gasperini's first trophy after losing three finals, and it couldn’t have come against a better opponent. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen – already nicknamed "The Invincibles" – had been unbeaten for 51 matches: a team specialized in thrilling comebacks in the last minutes of the game, finishing the Bundesliga with zero defeats, and until a few hours ago, dreaming of securing the treble, considering their upcoming DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern on Saturday. Bergamo fans couldn’t contain their emotion and flooded the city center of Bergamo, just a week after their defeat in the Coppa Italia final against Juventus, which risked further dampening their spirits. Bergamo has won, and if there were any doubts, Gasperini rightfully enters the history of the most revolutionary coaches in contemporary football.
